Repetitive ball throwing…..alternatives

Why I’m not a fan of endless ball throwing? …..Because I’d rather not turn your dog into a fetch-obsessed, ball-chasing maniac! While it’s fun for a while, repetitive ball throwing can lead to over-arousal, joint strain, and—let’s be honest—endless demands for just one more throw.

Ever noticed how your dog becomes more frantic after a few throws rather than settling down? That’s because this high-intensity, repetitive activity winds them up, not down. It’s like giving your dog a shot of caffeine instead of helping them burn off energy in a calm, controlled way. Over time, this can lead to a dog who’s constantly buzzing with excitement, making it harder for them to settle in everyday situations

There’s also the physical toll. Repeatedly sprinting after a ball can put strain on your dog’s joints, especially if you’re playing on hard surfaces. This can lead to wear and tear on their bodies, increasing the risk of injuries like sprains or strains. For young puppies, whose joints and bones are still developing, or older dogs with wear and tear, this can be particularly problematic.

And let’s not forget about the dreaded ball obsession. Before you know it, your dog might be dropping a ball at your feet non-stop, demanding that one more throw. What started as a fun game can quickly become an unhealthy fixation, making walks or playtime all about the ball and less about you.

I do wonder if ball chuckers are sponsored by metacam! There is a big difference between a few rounds of fetch and repetitive ball throwing.

So, what can you do instead? How about mixing it up with activities like scentwork to engage their brain, or a nice, controlled game of tug for some bonding? Marked, blind and memory retrieves - much more controlled without bounces and sharp turns. Even slow, structured walks (without a ball in sight!) can do wonders for your dog’s mental stimulation and overall wellbeing.

Look at what the dog was bred for and what they find rewarding…..take certain gundog breeds. They love the carrying process,

Take the gorgeous collie who love to stop movement. Throw the ball to them rather than away for the chase for the dopamine hit,

Trust me, your arm will thank you!
