Why loose lead walking isn’t happening!

Ive tried everything and they are still pulling on the lead!

Ever wondered why I'm always banging on about harnesses and treats as the go-to tools for training? In a world full of fancy contraptions like prongs, haltis, and slip leads claiming to be the magic fix, there’s a simple reason I stick to the basics. Today, I’ll shed some light on why a harness and a bit of grub can work wonders if you’re using them the right way. So, buckle up—you're about to get a new perspective on dog training!

Whats going on?!
My job as your trainer isn’t just to help you stop your dog from pulling on the lead. The truth is, dogs pull for all sorts of reasons—overexcitement, boredom, frustration, even stress. And slapping on equipment to yank them into submission? Well, it might stop the pulling, but it doesn’t solve the actual problem. Think of it like slapping a plaster on a leaking pipe—the water’s still there, just waiting to make a mess later.

Treat training not working?
I know what you're thinking: “I’ve tried the food thing, and my dog still pulls like they’re training for a sled race!” Sound familiar? You’re left wondering why they won’t take the treat, or worse, why they’ll gobble it up and go right back to pulling. Here's the kicker—those frustrations? They’re signs that your dog’s dealing with some deeper issues.

Look at the whole dog
If you’re not getting anywhere by being gentle, the answer isn’t to jump straight to force. Instead, take a breather and work on your dog’s mental well-being. Once their mind is in a calmer, happier place, you’ll find that lead walking becomes so much easier. This is exactly the kind of shift in perspective we focus on at Haigh Hounds —getting to the root of the behaviour.

Holistic approach for positive results
When you help the whole dog, not just the bit attached to the lead, the results speak for themselves. The pulling eases, and before long, you won’t need to rely on food as much because you’ve addressed the root causes. Plus, by tackling those underlying issues, you’re stopping other problems from cropping up later. It’s a win-win!

Can I help?
Harnesses, food, and a holistic training approach aren’t just random tools—they’re part of a bigger philosophy that focuses on understanding your dog inside and out. Once you’re able to dig beneath the surface, you’ll unlock your dog’s true potential. Ready to change your perspective and enjoy a more peaceful walk with your dog? Let's do this together!
