A brain dump on Rewards and reinforcement…….because what gets rewarded gets repeated
Rewards Vs reinforcer - You might give your dog a reward but it isn’t a reinforcer unless it increases the behaviour
How do you know what your dog wants to work for? You can’t predict…..”play choosies!”I worked with one dog and broccoli was his kryptonite! and it’s not all about food. toys, treats, games, praise
Bribing or training? If you drop the rewards and the behaviour stops it’s bribing. This could be because the dog isn’t in a learning state, the route of the issue is being overlooked or the dog doesn’t need training, they need help.
Not interested in toys or treats……why? Pain? Arousal? devalued?
How can we increase the value in the reinforcer? The clue is in the delivery
Schedules of reinforcement - I’m going to word vomit technical terms…..Variable or fixed ratio / Variable or fixed interval…..it can influence how fast a behaviour is learned, how frequently it is done and the strength of the response.
What’s breed got to do with it? Think what was my dog bred to do? What’s his job…..and use that as a big clue! My setter, bred to track long distance, He likes nothing more that a good game of “find it”
